One Week as a Wrapper
While I was pregnant with my first child, I used to fantasise about being a wrapper. I dreamed of how I would amaze people by throwing my child onto my back with whatever piece of cloth happened to be handy and possess an encyclopaedic knowledge of the different carries and their cultural origins.
Four years later I’m in love with mei tais, ring slings and structured carriers and don’t understand why anyone would choose to use a wrap. Why mess around with 4+ metres of fabric when you can manage it faster and more easily with a carrier that’s just as comfortable, costs less and even has a pretty print panel?
But I still love the idea of something as simple as a piece of cloth - and the economy of being able to get by with just one carrier! So it’s time for me to find out what all the fuss is about. I’m going to spend a week using nothing but a 4.6m Storch Leo wrap for my 11 month old, Meena. I’ll use a SSC for my nearly-4 year old, Emmy, if I need to do tandem carries, but nothing else. Here goes…
